After Two Decades, A Rapist Faces Consequences

Survivor shares story to inspire others
The victim chose to waive anonymity to motivate others to come forward about assaults

During his service on a court jury in 2018, Dan Cooper recognized he had to seek accountability for his own case subsequent to sexually assaulted in 2004.

Listening to the witnesses, I could clearly visualize myself in the same situation,” the survivor shared after waiving his privacy rights.

After the trial, the currently 39-year-old from the town of Watton opted to notify the police a second time to detail his attacker.

In late February 2024, 20 years post the violation, the offender from Suffolk’s Oulton Broad was handed eight years in jail after being found guilty of dual offenses of violation and a single charge of assault by penetration.

The survivor had been 17 years old when he came across then 21-year-old the assailant in the city of Norwich in 2004, and their interaction became his first relationship.

On a Saturday evening in the May of 2004, the duo had attended a barbecue when the perpetrator became intoxicated and requested Dan to take him back.

Around midnight, the individual told Dan to halt the vehicle on a secluded street adjacent to the medical facility in the Norfolk area.

The perpetrator assaulted Dan and resulted in serious internal injuries which led to him being admitted to hospital three times that season.

Traumatized, Dan was found a way to take the perpetrator home before returning to his family residence.

“I remained in bed for a long time wondering, ‘what has just happened? what transpired?’,” he stated.

During the subsequent September, Dan went to the authorities and detailed the attack.

The survivor stated he had given an account at the time, but it was not advanced any furthermore because he was “extremely unwell at that time”.

Relatives and other kin did not know he was gay, he mentioned.

“Times were unlike in those days,” he said.

Currently, Dan works as a project lead for the government sector, but he previously worked in a detention center, where he said he would frequently fight back teardrops when inmates discussed their own trauma.

The survivor also mentioned he was assaulted on the job, which also resulted in flashbacks.

“Later, while serving on the jury. Flashbacks back to the assault anew. It was a continuous loop that had to end,” he expressed.

The witnesses who helped achieve justice in the 2018 trial in which he was a panel member were “inspirational”, in the words of Dan.

“It was just remarkable to see them going up and providing testimony and handling the tough interrogations being posed to them,” he noted.

“I was working at Stansted Airport as an immigration officer at this time, and I had to take a three-week absence for health reasons.

“At that point I once more notified [the attack] to the law enforcement and I requested to proceed with it for me, which they consented to handle,” he concluded.

A pair of investigators from Norfolk Police were assigned to Dan’s case in 2018, and it advanced to a legal proceedings at the judicial venue in November of 2023.

In his victim impact statement, Dan detailed how he had been identified with complex PTSD (PTSD) associated with the violation.

“I have had, and still have, recurring contemplations of suicide,” he wrote.

One in four of women and nearly six percent of men have been affected by assault, or attempted violation, based on the Crime Survey for England and Wales.

An investigation found that forty-four percent of a group of 180 who were exposed to disturbing content in court reported indicators of PTSD.

“Previous traumatic events, mental health difficulties and instant stress reactions during a hearing can worsen psychological responses,” researchers noted.

In 2004, Dan’s mother approached Gilder when he came to see her son in the hospital after Dan had told her what had happened.

“An anger surged like a fire burning within me. I was so angry,” she remembered.

The perpetrator departed and it was the final occasion she encountered him.

While talking to her son, she commented: “I experienced great pride of you for persisting with what you believed in and pursuing it to the end. It was your justice. You’d put in tremendous effort.

“Mentally it had really taken a toll on you and we could see how you had difficulties.”

He mentioned his present role as an emergency responder for firefighting services had helped him with the recovery journey.

“Assisting the public has given me something to focus on and exist for,” he said.

He explained he now enjoyed his pets, mountain bikes and travelling.

Since May he has begun creating recordings about his story and posts them on digital networks, where he now has a following of 12,000 on the video app.
