Ex- FBI chief James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

The former director's lawyer entered the plea representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer stated he would try to have the legal matter thrown out for several causes including that his the accused, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was charged just days after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to move forward against him.

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative told the magistrate they planned to present various motions to throw out the case before a legal hearing, stating the government's case was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly designated to handle the legal matter.

The former director's legal matter was first handled by Erik Siebert, who left his position under influence from the former president after his examination into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Background Context

James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about several months into Donald Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the time, the director was leading an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director triggered a counter-response from the Democratic party when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not filed, leading to negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

The federal government claim Mr Comey gave untrue statements to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he provided false information to the upper house by stating he had not approved a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations information about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, obstruct and slow" the committee by making false statements to it.
