The Myanmar armed forces claims it has seized among the most notorious scam compounds on the frontier with Thai territory, as it retakes crucial territory surrendered in the continuing internal conflict.

KK Park, south of the border town of Myawaddy, has been linked with online fraud, financial crime and forced labor for the past five years.

Countless people were lured to the compound with guarantees of lucrative positions, and then coerced to operate complex frauds, taking countless millions of money from targets across the globe.

The junta, historically tainted by its associations to the scam industry, now declares it has taken the complex as it extends authority around Myawaddy, the primary commercial route to Thailand.

Military Progress and Tactical Aims

In recent weeks, the armed forces has repelled rebels in several parts of Myanmar, aiming to increase the amount of territories where it can hold a planned poll, commencing in December.

It still lacks authority over significant territories of the country, which has been torn apart by conflict since a armed takeover in February 2021.

The election has been dismissed as a sham by anti-junta elements who have sworn to obstruct it in territories they control.

Beginnings and Growth of KK Park

KK Park began with a rental contract in early 2020 to establish an commercial zone between the ethnic organization (KNU), the armed ethnic group which controls much of this area, and a obscure Hong Kong listed firm, Huanya International.

Researchers think there are connections between Huanya and a influential Asian underworld individual Wan Kuok Koi, often referred to as Broken Tooth, who has subsequently invested in additional scam facilities on the border.

The compound expanded quickly, and is readily noticeable from the Thai border of the border.

Those who succeeded to get away from it describe a harsh system imposed on the thousands, several from African countries, who were detained there, made to work excessive periods, with abuse and beatings applied on those who were unable to meet objectives.

Current Events and Claims

A statement by the military's information ministry claimed its personnel had "secured" KK Park, liberating more than 2,000 workers there and confiscating 30 of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite terminals – extensively utilized by fraud hubs on the Myanmar-Thai frontier for online activities.

The announcement accused what it called the "terrorist" ethnic organization and volunteer people's defence forces, which have been combating the military since the overthrow, for wrongfully controlling the territory.

The regime's claim to have shut down this well-known fraud centre is very likely targeted toward its primary supporter, China.

Beijing has been pressing the regime and the Thai administration to increase efforts to terminate the illegal activities managed by Asian networks on their shared frontier.

In previous months thousands of Asian employees were taken out of fraud facilities and sent on arranged aircraft back to China, after Thai authorities restricted access to power and petroleum resources.

Larger Landscape and Ongoing Operations

But KK Park is just a single of no fewer than 30 analogous facilities situated on the border.

A large portion of these are under the protection of ethnic Karen armed units allied to the junta, and the majority are still operating, with countless people running scams inside them.

In reality, the backing of these armed units has been crucial in assisting the armed forces push back the KNU and further rebel groups from area they captured over the previous 24 months.

The junta now dominates nearly all of the highway linking Myawaddy to the rest of Myanmar, a goal the regime established before it holds the first stage of the vote in December.

It has seized Lay Kay Kaw, a new town established for the KNU with Japanese funding in 2015, a time when there had been expectations for lasting peace in the territory following a national peace agreement.

That forms a more substantial defeat to the KNU than the seizure of KK Park, from which it did get limited revenue, but where the majority of the financial advantages went to military-aligned armed groups.

A knowledgeable contact has revealed that scam operations is ongoing in KK Park, and that it is possible the junta occupied merely a section of the large-scale facility.

The source also believes Beijing is giving the Myanmar military inventories of China-based people it seeks taken from the fraud complexes, and transported back to face trial in China, which may account for why KK Park was attacked.
